Your Metabolism Isn't Slow, It's Something Else
Aug 24, 2026"My metabolism is slow" is the most common thing I hear from parents who've hit a wall. Almost none of them actually have a slow metabolism. What they have is a metabolism that adapted to what they've been doing — which is a very different problem with a very different fix.
Your body isn't broken. It's just really good at what it does.
The Myth That Won't Die
"Slow metabolism" gets blamed for stalled weight loss, low energy, and "I eat barely anything and still don't lose weight." It's become the default explanation because it takes the responsibility off decisions and puts it on biology. Real metabolic disorders exist — thyroid conditions, certain medications, some genetic conditions — but they're the exception, not the rule. For most people, the metabolism is working exactly the way it's supposed to.
What Your Metabolism Actually Is
It's four things stacked together. Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is what you burn just existing, roughly 60-70% of your daily total. The thermic effect of food (TEF) is what it costs your body to digest what you eat, about 10%. Exercise is usually the smallest slice, 5-10%. And NEAT, non-exercise activity thermogenesis, is everything else: walking, standing, fidgeting, chores. NEAT can swing by hundreds of calories a day without you noticing, and it's usually where "slow metabolism" complaints actually live.
Why Progress Stalls (It's Not What You Think)
A few things actually cause a stall. Adaptive thermogenesis is real but usually modest — your body gets a bit more efficient at lower calories over time. NEAT quietly drops when you're tired or in a deficit, without you clocking it. Tracking drifts — portions creep, snacks get "forgotten," and that's universal, not a character flaw. And muscle loss lowers your baseline burn, especially if protein and resistance training aren't in the picture.
What Actually Moves the Needle
Prioritize protein — it preserves muscle and has the highest thermic effect of the three macros. Keep or add strength training to protect the muscle that's actually driving your metabolic rate. Protect your NEAT — walk more, stand more, don't let a sedentary week hide inside a week that looks "good" on paper. And give it time before troubleshooting. Most stalls are one to two weeks of noise, not a broken metabolism.
Your metabolism isn't the enemy here, and it isn't broken. It's responding exactly the way biology designed it to. The fix was never "fix your metabolism." It's protecting the muscle, movement, and consistency that keep it running the way it's supposed to.
