The Mommy Pouch Isn't a Weight Loss Problem
Jul 29, 2026A mom DM'd me on Insta last week because the pooch below her belly button hadn't moved an inch even though her bathroom scale told her she finally hit her pre-pregnancy weight. She thought something was wrong with her diet.
Nothing was wrong with her diet. That lower belly pooch usually isn't a weight problem at all.
Why the scale doesn't fix this
During pregnancy, the connective tissue running down the middle of your abdomen, the linea alba, stretches to make room. For a lot of moms, that tissue doesn't fully reconnect on its own after birth, no matter how much weight comes off. You can hit your pre-baby weight and still have that pooch, because it was never really about fat in the first place.
It's not fat, it's function
This is the part diet culture skips entirely. That pooch often comes from how your abdominal wall is working, or not working, not from where your body is storing fat. Posture, breathing patterns, and how you manage pressure in your core all play a role. A flatter stomach isn't just about fat-loss, it's more about function.
Why diet culture gets this wrong
Dieting targets fat. This isn't a fat problem, so more dieting doesn't touch it. Chasing a calorie deficit for a structural issue is why so many moms feel like they're doing everything right and still not seeing the change they expected.
How to actually check
A DR self-check, a simple way to feel whether that connective tissue has reconnected, takes a couple minutes and tells you what you're actually working with instead of guessing based on how your stomach looks in the mirror.
What actually helps
Reconnecting that tissue takes proper core centric breathing work, rebuilding pressure management within the core canister, and progressive core rehab, not more crunches and not more cardio. It takes longer than a diet does, but it actually addresses the real issue instead of chasing a number on the scale that was never the problem.
Your body isn't broken and it isn't lazy. It's working with connective tissue that needs the right kind of rebuilding, not another diet.
